Responsible Debt Collections

The other day, I was reading a collection article about how another collection agency came out with a “Consumers Bill of Rights”. I have to say after reading their Bill of Rights, I wasn’t very impressed. First of all the document was 5 pages and could have been summarized much better.

In short, their consumer bill of rights states what to expect if you deal with that collection agency.:

  • If we buy a debt, we will tell you that we own it.
  • If we will contact you, we will try and resolve the debt quickly and honestly.
  • If we can’t sue you then we will not attempt to collect from you, ei, you’re in bankruptcy.
  • […]

Loving Labor Day

There are a few things in society that people unanimously get behind, but I think a three day weekend is one of those things.  Labor Day may have its roots as some union demand, but for many of us it marks the unofficial end of summer and for some reason, the unofficial end of wearing white. Now, I’m not sure where the whole no wearing white thing comes from, so if someone has an answer please educate me and comment below.

Being from New England I have a solid appreciation for the changing of the seasons. When someone tells me summer is ending, I take that remark very seriously and act accordingly.  Despite the rainy weather […]

End of Summer Consumer Advice

It’s possible that as the summer comes to an end, you’re getting some type of communication from a collection agency. Maybe you went on vacation without checking your bills, maybe you had a pricey summer, or maybe you just had the best summer ever and neglected to go through your mail. You are not alone, according to the CFPB, 30 million consumers are contacted by a collection agency. Whatever the reason, you may be late on a payment, and a bit confused as to why a collection agency is calling you.

Collection agencies are third party companies brought in by a business to collect on late accounts. If you haven’t paid a dentist’s bill, for example, […]

A Break From Work

This past weekend I was able to take a break from collecting bills at our collection agency

and enjoy an event unlike anything I have ever been to before. I was given the opportunity to see some of the great Detroit Red Wings players along with other Detroit sport celebrities of the past play softball at a charity event for the Joe Kocur Foundation for Children. It was Kocur’s 5th year putting on this event and the foundation assists local charities with the primary goal of focusing on families that need assistance either by financial means or logistical support.

Not only did I watch them play but also met them in between games. To […]

Referring Tier II Consumers back to APR

Quite often we receive calls from clients who have heard from a consumer who is in our Tier II program.  This consumer has generally called stating something such as: they would like to make payments to you now or that they didn’t like who they spoke to at APR and they would rather work with you.  Sound familiar?

So you may ask, why shouldn’t we ‘call off the dogs’ and work with this person.  They have finally contacted me and they want to pay me now.  What do I need APR for?

There are several reasons why you do not want to work with a consumer once they are in Tier II and here are just […]

What is The CFPB?

The CFPB is the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and is a government agency whose mission is to “make markets for consumer financial products and services work for Americans.” The CFPB is now involved in the debt collection industry, monitoring consumer feedback and complaints, and any collection agency conducting business in this country needs to be aware of the bureau and their standards.

Like many laws and agencies that are formed, the future is a bit unclear and their role in the collection industry and the collections and receivables of any debt in general is still vague. What we can tell you is that we are keeping an eye on this and will update as often as […]

Quick Tips for Real Green Users

A couple quick tips for all of the Service Assistant users out there to make your days a little bit easier.

Protect Your Identity … Starting with Your Credit

I know we have gone over this before but it’s such an important topic that I feel it’s necessary to keep it in front of you. We just recently had an employee who was the victim of identity theft, so this stuff happens!  Pulling your credit report is an essential part of securing your financial future. Reviewing your credit in full to see who might have pulled your credit, looking for signs of identity theft and taking quick action to clean up any mistakes are vital to maintaining good credit and a good credit score.

You should be checking your credit report on a regular basis to ensure that there are no signs of identity theft […]

What Should I Ask a Collection Agency?

Sometimes a small business or any size business for that matter needs extra help when it comes to collecting delinquent accounts, and that’s when it’s time to start looking at collection agencies. There are some important questions to ask when shopping around for an agency though. We’ve covered many things to ask in previous blogs and videos but our own Michelle recently spoke with Andy Yavello in our Michigan office to get his take on the matter.

Andy suggests these questions:

Are you nationally accredited? A good collection agency should have national accreditation. Here at APR, we belong to the ACA, the Association of Credit and Collection Professionals and we adhere to a strict code […]
