St.Patrick’s Day! Whooohoo!! Growing up with Irish on both sides of the family I have some fond memories of March, 17th. The Irish are often considered to be lucky people. But is luck earned, or is it…well…simply luck? When thinking about this concept two memorable quotes come into mind.
“I’d rather be lucky than good” Ugh… I remember the first time I heard this miserable quote. A competitor of mine muttered it to me when I was on a golf course during a junior tournament when my stray drive hit a tree and miraculously ended up on the fairway. I thought to my young self “Why can’t I be lucky AND good!” Though my understanding of the quote has matured since my junior golfing days, whenever it rears its ugly head it’s inevitably just as stomach turning.
“The harder you work, the luckier you get” I also coincidentally heard this quote for first time on the golf course. This time I was complaining about a bad bounce my ball took off a cart-path and my grandfather was trying to cheer me up with some wisdom. Not sure who coined the quote (some say it was golfing legend Gary Player) but the moment I heard it just made sense to me. Basically, I thought, the more effort I put in, the more I get out…basic physics.

I’d rather be lucky than good on a slot machine in Vegas, or on a two dollar scratch off I bought at the gas station…but in debt collections, the harder you work the luckier you get.
